The mission of the Sturgeon School Division is to ensure that all students achieve success in the programs of study offered in our schools.

Our schools focus on helping children develop emotionally, intellectually, physically, morally and spiritually into creative and critical thinkers with strong communicative and computational skills.

School Councils

School councils were established in 1995, to increase parent and community involvement in the education of children in Alberta. Public schools, including charter schools, are required to attempt to establish school councils.

Parent Council Agendas will now be posted as a link on the website homepage

9.      Staffing Changes for next year

·         We are unsure as to the exact classroom configuration for next year. At this point we are trying not to have any split classes

·         Each school has been given an allotment for an Assessment coach (0.2) and a Technology Coach (0.1). The role of these people is to assist other teachers in the implementation of Assessment for Learning Strategies as well as the utilization of New Classroom technologies such as the Interactive Whiteboards as well as using other existing and emerging technology. At this point is appears both positions will be filled by Mr. Propp.

10.  Proposed Timetable Changes for 2009-10 – the blocks will be 45 minutes long for blocks 1 – 6 and block 7 will be 22 minutes or one half block.  DEAR time will be scheduled each day for 25 minutes following noon recess.  Offices will be open from 8 am to 3:45 pm (instead of 4 pm) daily.  Early Dismissal will be after lunch eating at 11:53 am.

11.  Earlier Dismissal for PD - This earlier dismissal on Staff Meeting Wednesdays is to allow for Professional Learning Groups to occur monthly before each staff meeting and in exchange one less PD day on the Division Calendar.  This format will most likely occur in all the Sturgeon Schools in 2009-10.   Camilla School piloted this program in 2008-09 and many other schools were interested in the monthly PD opportunity.

12.  Provincial Achievement Tests – grade threes begin writing their PAT’s on May 12 and May 13.  The remaining tests follow on June 16 (LA) and June 18 (Math).  All Grade Threes in the Province are required to write these exams.  The private members bill in the Legislature proposing that PAT’s be abolished for Grade threes was passed. This does not mean they will, but it is quite possible the government will look closely at the PATs and alternatives.
